I became slightly obsessed with trying to understand Vermeer—the quiet, the light, the strange stillness of his paintings—and decided the logical thing to do was try it myself.
It did not go as planned.
Somewhere between studying the reference and fighting with the paint, I stopped trying to make a Vermeer and let this person emerge instead. She’s awkward and moody and a little strange, and I love her much more because of it.
A painting about admiration, frustration, and what happens when your hand refuses to do what your brain had in mind.
