Another attempt at channeling Vermeer. Another reminder that I am, in fact, not Vermeer.
I kept trying to find his softness and restraint and instead made something chunkier, stranger and entirely my own. Eventually the frustration became part of the painting—and probably the most interesting part.
I’m learning that sometimes the point of studying someone you admire isn’t to paint like them. It’s to notice what comes out of you when you can’t.
