The Swing

That's me in my underwear, swinging in the cul-de-sac where my family all lived.

I remember trying to swing so high the chains would go slack for a second before gravity caught you and snapped you back down. I'm sure it wasn't particularly safe. None of it was.

But mostly I remember the freedom of it. Running around half-dressed, cousins and family everywhere, no awareness of how I looked or who was watching. Just completely inside my own life.

This was also the first painting where I stopped trying so hard to make a good painting and let myself paint.

Maybe that's why I keep coming back to her.

• Original acrylic painting on canvas board
